Moving abroad is one of life's great adventures, but it requires considerably more planning than a domestic move. This guide covers everything you need to know about moving your belongings from the UK to another country, from choosing a shipping method to navigating customs.
There are three main options for shipping your belongings abroad: air freight, sea freight, and overland transport. Air freight is the fastest (typically 3–7 days) but also the most expensive, and is only practical for smaller volumes. Sea freight is the most cost-effective option for larger volumes, but takes considerably longer — typically 3–6 weeks for European destinations and 6–12 weeks for destinations in Asia, Australia, or the Americas. Overland transport is the most practical option for European destinations, typically taking 3–7 days.
For sea freight, you can choose between a Full Container Load (FCL) — where you fill an entire shipping container — or groupage, where your belongings share a container with other customers' goods. FCL is faster and reduces the risk of damage, but is only cost-effective if you have enough belongings to fill at least half a container. Groupage is more cost-effective for smaller volumes.
Every country has different customs regulations for personal effects. In most cases, you will need to provide a detailed inventory of your belongings, proof of residency in the destination country, and evidence that you have been resident in the UK for at least 12 months. Some items — including certain foods, plants, and animals — may be prohibited or require special permits. Daley & Co's international team handles all customs documentation as part of our service.
International moves require specialist export packing to protect your belongings during the extended transit time and the rigours of sea or air freight. Export packing uses double-walled boxes, additional cushioning materials, and in some cases purpose-built wooden crates for fragile or high-value items. Never attempt an international move with standard domestic packing materials.
Standard Goods in Transit insurance is not sufficient for international moves. You will need specialist marine cargo insurance that covers your belongings for the full transit period, including loading, unloading, and any intermediate storage. Daley & Co arranges comprehensive marine cargo insurance for all international moves.
