The Ultimate Moving House Checklist

Moving house is consistently rated as one of life's most stressful experiences — but with the right preparation, it doesn't have to be. This comprehensive checklist covers everything you need to do from eight weeks before your move right through to settling into your new home.

8 Weeks Before: The Big Decisions

Book your removal company as early as possible — the best companies get booked up quickly, especially for Friday moves and end-of-month dates. Obtain at least three written quotes after a proper survey. Notify your children's schools of the move. Begin researching schools in your new area if you have children. Contact your solicitor to confirm the expected completion date.

6 Weeks Before: Start Decluttering

Begin a systematic declutter of your home. Sell, donate, or dispose of anything you no longer need — this will reduce your removal costs and make unpacking much easier. Book a skip if you have large items to dispose of. Order packing materials if you are packing yourself. Begin packing non-essential items such as books, out-of-season clothing, and decorative items.

4 Weeks Before: Notify Everyone

Notify the following of your change of address: HMRC, DVLA, your bank and building society, your employer, your GP and dentist, the electoral register, your insurance providers, subscriptions and memberships, and the Royal Mail (set up a mail redirection service). Contact your utility providers to arrange final meter readings and transfer of accounts.

2 Weeks Before: Final Preparations

Confirm all details with your removal company in writing, including the start time, access arrangements, and any special requirements. Arrange parking suspension if required — contact your local council at least two weeks in advance. Confirm your completion date with your solicitor. Pack a 'first night' box with essentials you will need immediately on arrival: kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, bedding, towels, toiletries, phone chargers, and a change of clothes.

Moving Day: The Day Itself

Be ready for the removal crew when they arrive. Do a final walk-through of every room, including loft, garage, and garden. Take meter readings at both properties and photograph them. Collect all keys, fobs, and alarm codes from the vendor. Check that all windows and doors are locked at your old property. Keep your first night box with you rather than loading it on the van.

After the Move: Settling In

Check all items against your inventory before the removal crew leaves. Report any damage to the removal company immediately and in writing. Register with a new GP and dentist. Update your driving licence and vehicle registration. Introduce yourself to your new neighbours. And most importantly — put the kettle on.
