Whether you need storage for a few weeks between moves or a long-term solution for items you cannot accommodate in your new home, understanding your options helps you make the right choice. This guide explains the main types of storage available and how to choose the best solution for your needs.
Containerised storage — also known as vault storage — involves packing your belongings into purpose-built wooden or steel containers, which are then stored in a secure warehouse. This is the preferred option for removal companies because it keeps your belongings together, reduces the risk of damage, and makes it easy to retrieve specific items. Daley & Co uses containerised storage at our secure facilities across the North West.
Self-storage facilities allow you to access a lockable unit and store your belongings yourself. This gives you maximum flexibility and access, but requires you to transport your belongings to and from the facility yourself. Self-storage is typically more expensive than containerised storage for equivalent volumes, and the quality of security and climate control varies significantly between facilities.
For short-term storage between moves — typically a few days to a few weeks — containerised storage with a removal company is usually the most convenient and cost-effective option. For longer-term storage of items you do not need regular access to, containerised storage remains the best option. If you need frequent access to your stored items, self-storage may be more practical.
Most household items can be stored, but there are some exceptions. Flammable or hazardous materials — including paints, solvents, and gas cylinders — cannot be stored. Perishable food items should not be stored. Valuable items such as jewellery, cash, and important documents should be kept with you rather than placed in storage. Always check with your storage provider about their specific restrictions.
Your home contents insurance may not cover items in storage — check your policy carefully. Daley & Co provides insurance cover for all items stored in our facilities. If you use a self-storage facility, you will typically need to arrange separate insurance cover.
