Daley & Co
Too big for the car. Too precious for a stranger with a van.
Yes. Daley & Co handle single items and small moves from around £180 locally, with the same insured crews and protective materials as a full house move. A studio or one-room move locally is typically £250 to £450. No survey is usually needed and a fixed price can often be confirmed the same working day — a genuinely insured alternative to a man with a van.
Overview
Not every move fills a lorry. A studio flat, a student's belongings, a single wardrobe going to a daughter's new house, the contents of one room after a bereavement — these jobs matter just as much as a five-bedroom relocation, and they deserve better than a stranger with a hired van and no insurance. Daley & Co handle small moves with the same uniformed crews, the same goods-in-transit cover and the same 78 years of accumulated care that we bring to a full house move. The job is smaller. The standard is not.

What's Included
There is no formal definition, but in practice a small move is anything that does not need a full removal crew for a full day. Typical examples include a studio or one-bedroom flat, the contents of a single room, a student's belongings at the start or end of term, a handful of items going into or out of storage, a piece of furniture being passed between family members, or a purchase collected from a retailer or auction house. Small moves are also common at difficult moments — clearing a room after a bereavement, separating a household, or moving a relative into supported living or care. Because these jobs are smaller they are often treated as low-value work by the industry and handed to whoever is cheapest and available. We take a different view: a small move is frequently someone's entire worldly possessions, or a single item of enormous sentimental value, and it warrants the same standard of care as a house move.
Man-and-van services can be perfectly adequate for moving a mattress across town, and we would not pretend otherwise. The distinction becomes important when something goes wrong. Most man-and-van operators carry no goods-in-transit insurance, or carry cover with exclusions that make a claim near impossible. Many are sole traders working alone, which means heavy or awkward items get manoeuvred by one person rather than two. Some are lead-generation platforms that sell your job to whichever driver bids lowest, so the person arriving at your door is unknown to the company you booked and unaccountable afterwards. By contrast, Daley & Co crews are directly employed and trained, our vehicles are our own and maintained by us, our insurance is comprehensive, and we are a member of the British Association of Removers — which means an independent dispute resolution route if we ever fail you. If your load is genuinely just a mattress, use a van. If it contains anything you would be upset to lose, the difference in price buys you a great deal.

Small moves have more scope for saving than full house moves, because they are easier to fit around other work. The most effective lever is date flexibility: if you can accept a mid-week, mid-month slot, or let us choose the day within a given week, we can often combine your job with other work travelling in the same direction and pass on the saving. Packing your own boxes is the second lever, and for a small move it is usually realistic — most people can box up a single room themselves. Third, being precise about the item list helps: a clear inventory means we resource the job correctly rather than pricing in a contingency for the unknown. Finally, honest information about access at both ends prevents day-of-move surcharges. Stairs with no lift, a long carry from the parking space, or a narrow street that a larger vehicle cannot enter all affect the job, and telling us in advance is always cheaper than us discovering it on the day.
A significant proportion of small moves involve our storage warehouse at one end. Common situations include a tenancy ending before the next one begins, a renovation requiring a room to be cleared, a house sale completing before the purchase, or an inheritance needing to be held while a family decides what to do with it. Our storage is containerised — your belongings are loaded into a dedicated wooden container which is sealed and then handled as a single unit, rather than being repeatedly carried in and out of a shared room. That means less handling, less risk of damage, and no strangers moving past your possessions. Because we handle both the move and the storage, there is no second company to coordinate with and no additional handling charge for moving goods between the two. Small quantities are welcome; you are charged for the space you use rather than a fixed unit size.
The North West holds one of the largest student populations in Europe, spread across Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Preston, Lancaster and Liverpool, and a student move is a small move with its own particular rhythm. Term dates concentrate demand into a few short weeks in September and June, halls of residence often impose narrow arrival windows and strict loading bay rules, and shared houses rarely have anywhere to park. We handle these moves regularly and plan around them: an early slot to beat the queue at a hall's loading bay, a smaller vehicle where a street cannot take anything larger, and a crew who will carry up several flights rather than leaving boxes in a lobby. Parents booking on behalf of a son or daughter are welcome to arrange everything remotely, including payment, and we will deal directly with the student on the day. For a first-year moving into halls, the whole job is usually a couple of hours. For a graduate leaving a shared house with furniture accumulated over three years, it is closer to a conventional small removal.
A large share of our small moves involve someone moving into a smaller home, a retirement flat or a care setting, where only a fraction of a household is travelling and the rest has to be dealt with. These jobs need patience more than lifting capacity. We work to a room-by-room plan agreed in advance, keep the items that matter clearly separated from those going elsewhere, and take furniture apart where a narrower doorway or a lift demands it. Where a property must also be cleared, we can move the retained items to the new address, take a portion into storage while a family decides, and arrange for the remainder to be collected for donation or disposal, all as a single coordinated job rather than three separate bookings. Families frequently arrange these moves from a distance, sometimes from overseas, and we are used to reporting back with photographs and keeping one named coordinator on the file from the first call to the last box.
Pricing Guide
Small moves are priced on the same basis as our full removals — distance, access and how much there is to carry — but without the minimum charges that apply to a full-day job. The figures below are indicative for the North West. Every quote is fixed in writing before the day, and for small moves we can usually provide it the same day you enquire.
From approximately £180. One piece of furniture or a small group of items moved locally, blanket-wrapped and secured.
From approximately £280–£450 depending on distance. Often cheaper again if your dates are flexible and we can align the job with other work travelling that way.
From approximately £250–£450. The contents of a single room or a compact studio flat, moved locally within a half day.
From approximately £350–£550. A modest one-bedroom property moved locally, typically a half to full day.
From approximately £180–£350. Term-time collections and deliveries; combining with other student moves on the same route reduces the cost further.
From approximately £180 for the move, plus containerised storage charged on the space you actually use rather than a fixed unit.
All prices are indicative, exclude VAT, insurance, and insurance premium tax (IPT), and are subject to a free home survey. Final pricing is confirmed following survey and includes a full breakdown of all applicable charges.
How It Works
A short phone call or online form is usually enough for a small move — no home survey needed. Tell us the items, the two addresses and the access at each end.
We confirm a fixed price in writing before the day. For small moves we can usually quote the same working day you enquire.
Your items are blanket-wrapped and secured properly for transit. A single item travelling alone still gets protected as though it were part of a full load.
We carry items to the room of your choice rather than leaving them in the hallway, and take away any protective wrapping we've used.
Why Choose Us
Man-and-van operators are often uninsured, frequently subcontracted and rarely accountable if something is damaged. We are a British Association of Removers member with our own crews, our own vehicles and our own warehouse — and a complaints route that leads to a named person rather than a disconnected mobile number.
The temptation with a small job is to rush it. We resource small moves properly, with the same protective materials and the same handling standards as a full removal, because a single antique chest is no less breakable for travelling alone.
Many small moves happen at difficult moments — a bereavement, a separation, a move into care. Our crews are used to these situations and understand that the job is rarely just about furniture.
